Chengdu is known for having significant traffic congestion, often described as chronic or severe, particularly during morning and evening rush hours. As of June 2024, the city surpassed Shanghai and Beijing to become the city with the highest number of vehicle registrations in China, which has intensified the challenge of maintaining smooth traffic flow. Congestion is most prominent on major thoroughfares like the first through third ring roads and near traffic hotspots such as hospitals, scenic spots, and schools. To address these long-standing issues, Chengdu has implemented an intelligent transport system (ITS) that utilizes artificial intelligence to monitor real-time traffic and regulate flow through LED guidance screens. While the city continues to expand its modern metro and bus rapid transit (BRT) systems to encourage public transport use, travelers are frequently advised to prioritize the subway over taxis or ride-sharing apps like Didi to avoid unpredictable delays on the road.
