The four primary giant panda reserves and bases in and around Chengdu are the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base, the Dujiangyan Panda Base, and the Bifengxia Panda Base. The Chengdu Research Base, located just 10 kilometers from the city center, is the most famous and accessible site, dedicated to conservation education and captive breeding. The Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base, situated within the Wolong National Nature Reserve, focuses on wilderness training and the rehabilitation of pandas for release into the wild. The Dujiangyan Panda Base, also known as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Giant Panda, is primarily known for its panda volunteer programs and its work in rescue and elderly care. Finally, the Bifengxia Panda Base in Ya'an serves as a research and breeding facility that houses many pandas in a lush, mountainous environment designed to simulate their natural habitat. Together, these four facilities form the core of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
