The number of giant pandas in Chengdu includes both those in captivity and those living in the wild. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, which maintains the largest artificial breeding population in the world, currently houses 237 giant pandas as of 2023. This captive population has grown significantly from just six rescued animals when the base was founded in 1987. Additionally, the Chengdu area of the Giant Panda National Park supports a population of 73 wild pandas, serving as a critical gene corridor between the Qionglai and Minshan mountain ranges. The city's conservation efforts also extend to other species, with the breeding base providing a home for approximately 76 red pandas.
