Chengdu experiences significant air pollution, particularly during the winter months from October to March, due to its location in the Sichuan Basin where surrounding mountains trap pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10. During this peak season, the Air Quality Index (AQI) often reaches unhealthy levels, frequently exceeding 150, which can lead to a persistent grey haze and negative health effects for residents and visitors. While the city has made substantial efforts to improve air quality since 2013, it generally maintains a moderate-to-high pollution level throughout the colder season caused by a combination of industrial activity, increased power usage, and heavy motor traffic. Conversely, air quality improves significantly during the spring and summer, often resulting in clear blue skies and more acceptable AQI readings, though the city is still ranked among the more polluted urban areas globally. To mitigate health risks on high-pollution days, it is recommended to monitor real-time AQI apps, use N95 masks when outdoors, and utilize indoor air purifiers.
