Historically, Chinese "couch beds" and seating forms like the "Ta" developed as early as the Ming and Qing dynasties, with Suzhou being a primary center for fine production. In the modern era, Chengdu has become a major global hub for furniture production, led by pioneering companies rather than individual inventors. Quanyou Furniture, one of the largest in China, was founded in Chengdu in 1986, followed by other major players like Sunhoo Industrial Co., Ltd. in 1989. These companies transformed Chengdu into a "furniture capital" by integrating traditional styles with modern manufacturing and international design collaborations. While a legend suggests the first upholstered sofa was created by an anonymous Indian carpenter for a nobleman, the "Chengdu sofa" as a commercial entity is the result of industrial development by these large-scale enterprises.
