The Chengdu J-20, China's first domestically developed fifth-generation stealth fighter, began its physical assembly in the late 2000s following the Chengdu Aerospace Corporation's successful 2008 bid for the J-XX program. The first prototype, designated "2001," was built and underwent high-speed taxiing tests starting on December 22, 2010, at the Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute. This development culminated in the aircraft's historic maiden flight on January 11, 2011, at approximately 1:11 PM in Chengdu. This successful flight lasted about 15 minutes and marked a significant milestone in Chinese aviation, transitioning the J-20 from a developmental prototype into a flight-testing phase that eventually led to its official entry into active service with the People's Liberation Army Air Force in 2017.
