What river goes through Chengdu

The Jin River, often referred to as the Jinjiang River or the "Mother River" of Chengdu, is the primary waterway flowing through the heart of the city. Historically vital for irrigation, transportation, and defense, the river is a tributary of the Min River, which eventually joins the Yangtze River system. It is composed of several sections, most notably the Fu and Nan rivers, which encircle the ancient city center before merging. Today, the Jin River is a central feature of Chengdu's urban landscape and cultural identity, famous for its scenic night views, illuminated landmarks like the historic Anshun Bridge, and vibrant waterfront areas that host boat tours and light shows. The river remains a symbol of the city's long history, dating back to the development of the Dujiangyan irrigation system over 2,000 years ago, which continues to nourish the fertile Chengdu Plain.
