is chengdu affected by the coronavirus

Chengdu was significantly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, starting with its first confirmed cases in January 2020. Throughout the pandemic, the city adhered to China's strict zero-COVID policy, which led to multiple periods of intense restrictions, mass testing, and large-scale lockdowns. One of the most notable disruptions occurred in September 2022, when the city’s more than 21 million residents were placed under a rigorous lockdown that confined approximately 16 million people to their homes and suspended the majority of flights. While the Chinese government shifted away from these strict policies in late 2022, resulting in a broad easing of travel and social restrictions, travelers to the region may still encounter residual health screening measures such as medical checks or electronic arrival card requirements. As of 2024, while the acute emergency phase has passed and the city has largely returned to normal life, authorities still recommend maintaining good hygiene and staying informed through official health channels.
