According to the latest census and official figures, approximately 17,400 foreigners with permanent residency permits live and work in Chengdu. The Tongzilin Community is the city's largest international neighborhood, serving as a base for more than 2,000 of these residents. While the population of long-term expatriates, primarily students and professionals, saw a significant rise over the last decade—reaching over 15,000 from 80 different countries as early as 2013—some reports suggest that the total number of long-term foreign residents has fluctuated or decreased since 2019. In terms of short-term visits, the city recorded 690,000 foreign arrivals in 2018, which at the time accounted for about 3.5 percent of Chengdu's total population of 20 million. To support this growing international presence, local officials have continued to expand community services and infrastructure, including the hosting of 23 foreign consulates.
