has chengdu us consulate reopened 2024

As of late 2024, the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu remains closed and has not reopened. The facility was officially shuttered on July 27, 2020, after the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs revoked its license in direct retaliation for the U.S. government's forced closure of the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, Texas. Since the closure, Chinese authorities have taken control of the compound, and diplomatic relations regarding the reopening of both missions remain stalled. In 2021, Chinese officials stated that the United States must act first to resolve the issue as the closure was unilaterally initiated by Washington; however, no official agreements to restore the consulates have been reached since then. While other U.S. diplomatic missions in China, such as the consulate in Wuhan, have recently expanded their services or moved to new offices in 2024, the Chengdu consulate's operations remain suspended, and travelers or U.S. citizens in the southwestern region must still seek consular services through the U.S. Embassy in Beijing or other remaining consulates.
