Does Chengdu experience typhoons

Chengdu does not experience direct typhoons. Located in southwestern China, the city is situated in a basin surrounded by high mountain ranges and is over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) away from the nearest coastline. These geographical barriers completely shield Chengdu from the destructive winds and coastal storm surges associated with typhoons.

However, during the peak typhoon season in the summer (usually July to September), strong typhoons making landfall on China's southern or eastern coasts can occasionally push moisture deep inland. This can result in indirect weather effects in Chengdu, such as increased rainfall, overcast skies, or moderate rainstorms.

For visitors and expats, there is no need to worry about typhoon evacuations or severe tropical storm damage in Chengdu. You should simply prepare for typical summer rain showers by carrying an umbrella or raincoat.
