can you hug a panda in chengdu

As of 2020, hugging or holding a giant panda is no longer permitted at any panda base in China, including the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Dujiangyan Panda Base. All programs involving direct physical contact were suspended to protect the animals from diseases, specifically canine distemper, and to minimize the stress and trauma that non-essential human interaction can cause. While historical reports and older travel guides may mention "panda hugging" photo opportunities for a significant fee, these activities have been strictly banned by the government. Travelers can still participate in "Panda Keeper" or volunteer programs at bases like Dujiangyan or Wolong, which allow for close-up observation, cleaning of enclosures, and preparing food, but these experiences are strictly hands-off. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, typically by 7:30 AM, to see the pandas at their most active during morning feeding sessions from a safe distance.
